Physical Medicine FAQ

What is the difference between physical medicine and general medical care?

Physical medicine in Palm Desert is much more specific to the diagnosis and treatment of nerve, muscle, bone and joint disorders. Where general medical care is just that…”general.” General medical care is the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease, illness, injury, and other physical and mental impairments.

Our physical medicine practice goal is to decrease or eliminate pain and enhance performance without surgery, thereby improving the patient’s quality of life. As a physical medicine office, we utilize the combined talents of a multi-specialty team of healthcare professionals to provide you with a whole-body approach to your pain or injury.

Does your office write prescriptions for medicine or drugs?

No. Our philosophy is to keep our treatment as natural and least invasive as possible and to keep the side effects of our treatment to an absolute minimum. If you need something different than what we provide or if you need a prescription we would refer you to your primary care physician.

What do you use in the injections that your office prescribes? Do you use cortisone?

Lidocaine and/or Sarapin is used for trigger point injections.

Sarapin with Lidocaine for most joint injections.

Sodium Hyaluronate (Supartz) for arthritic knee joint therapy injections.

No, we do not use Cortisone in our injections. Cortisone has several potential side effects – thinning of skin, bruising easier, weight gain, face puffiness, elevation of blood pressure, cataract formation, thinning of bones (osteoporosis). This is not a complete list.

How much does it cost?

It depends on the care plan our healthcare professionals prescribe for you, as well as your insurance policy limitations. We offer affordable payment plans. We are more than happy to prepare a financial plan for you that will give you a better idea to help you budget for your care.

Regardless of the cost, we will always discuss your out-of-pocket amount with you before you begin any treatment. We don’t like surprises and we are guessing you don’t either.

Therapy FAQ

What are the benefits of traction?

Traction can be used for a variety of purposes. It can be used to help decrease compressive forces in the neck or back, which can help take pressure off of the discs that reside between the vertebrae (spinal bones) in the spine. It can also open up the spaces where nerves exit the spinal canal, which can help relieve pressure off of a compressed nerve. Traction can also help stretch the muscles and joint structures around the spine. Common conditions that often benefit from traction are herniated or bulging discs, arthritis, strains and muscle spasms.

What are the benefits to whole body vibration therapy?

Toning, strengthening, increase of bone density, increase circulation, increase mobility, improved balance, increased lymphatic drainage, increase production of important hormones such as: human growth hormone, serotonin, neurophin, endorphins and testosterone.
